Server Hosting

RRZE manages server systems for facilities and clients of FAU. We support you from the selection of hardware to the long-term, smooth operation of the server system. A complete service includes maintenance of the operating system (security patches, updates, central configuration management, etc.) as well as complete monitoring of the server’s software and hardware.

The server hardware is acquired exclusively via existing framework agreements and must meet the following requirements:

  • Dell PowerEdge R4xx, R6xx (Intel) and R6xxx, R7xxx (AMD) including iDRAC Datacenter with OpenManage Enterprise Advanced license
  • 19″ rack-mountable hardware including rails and rackmounting kits
  • Use of other hardware from the server framework contracts requires prior consultation and approval from RRZE

Furthermore, RRZE coordinates repair and replacement work in the event of hardware defects and ensures regular maintenance, backup, monitoring, and updating of the operating system.

The following operating systems are available:

  • Windows Server (https://www.rrze.fau.de/hard-software/betriebssysteme/windows/)
  • Ubuntu (LTS) (https://www.rrze.fau.de/hard-software/betriebssysteme/linux/)

This allows the client to focus on the services and applications they need, and if necessary, draw on the support of the RRZE system specialists.

Accommodation

  • For server hardware up to a size of 4 rack units (U)
  • In a secure and climate-controlled server room
  • With dual power supply, secured by redundant UPS and emergency power generator (for extended city power outages)

Infrastructure

  • Redundant network connection with 2×1 GBit and/or 2×10 GBit (one-time connection fee)
  • Dedicated network for server and management console
  • Operation with multiple IP addresses is only possible to a limited extent (prior consultation with RRZE required in any case)
  • Multiple subnets on one network interface are not possible via a single connection (trunk)
  • Access to the management console (iDRAC) only from the FAU network or via VPN
